From my experience, the key early on is raising Cain and Thomas. Sweep Battles, Telescope missions, and Fierce Spiky all drop their fragments when you clear them, so pushing those consistently is what matters. Focus on Cain first — once he's strong enough to clear Trial of the Forest, you can grab his weapon there, and that's when you really take off.
